Sunday Stash on Monday

While in London - I couldn't resist spending the "vacation allowance" my granny (one more secret how students support their fabric habits - of course first you need a granny who likes you). So staying true to my usual ways - I bought what I liked without planning on using the fabric for anything specific.

I did take some pitures without the chocolate - but then I thought this would be the perfect chance to do some food education. Ritter Sport is mostly known for their square chocolate bars, but well they do a few other things too and my absolute favourite is the Jamaica Rum bar ... I doubt they will survive long on my desk.

But I also have a lot of old and strange fabrics come into my stash - my great aunt passed away before Christmas and none of her daughters wanted the sewing supplies so I'm currently going through boxes and tins with all sorts of interessting things, but yeah some of it also goes straight into the bin. Anyway here is part of what she called "Wäschespitzen" - clothes' lace.

The one rigth below the blue leave-ribbon/band is actually from an underskirt. I just need to find out what to do with it ... I think I haven't worn anyhting with lace since the culture shock of going to secondary school.

quilt backs and doll quilts

Well yeah I got some backing fabric yesterday and then I got back to writing and then I just had to think about sewing and the August Doll Quilt I still need to get done. So I did a late night sewing session with some ice cream  and another re-run of Firefly ..

 

 Isn't that some great fabric? well I liked it a great deal and I guess I have enought to use it as backing and then have enough left to  us it in a quilt ...

And as I had to store it away - because no I'm not going to start bastign any quilts anytime soon - I thought I would show the rest of them. Some are really ugly - the creme ones, especially the one with stars, maybe I need to swap them.

But I need to start to piece baackings or I will be stuck for always with quilts that are a max. of 59 inch width. And I really don't like "borders".



Any tips on backing piecing?
I read someplace that you should do it in thirds and not in twos - so you avoid the seams being at the same place where the grease from folding and therefore the most stress will be.




Yes and because "storing away" backing fabirc is really not going to do it to calm a fabric-addicted brain on withdrawl - I decided it was ok to do a little sewing after 8. The theme for August was "Nine-patches" and I always liked the "Disappearing ninepatch" pattern.
I also remember me complaining time and time again about no one using orange in quilts - so I decided it was time for me to do something about that.



It's a Quilt for August - so some yellow for the still summer, some orange for the  almost-but-not-yet autumn, some specs of colour - just because and red s a frame, well I like red. Of course that explanation I'm making up as I go here - it's complete and utter nonsense. I just happen to have a lot of orange and a lot of red and like both of the colours. And I really am no one to have hidden agendas when using colours. I do what I like. Choosign colours is gut work.

my love for unpieced backs

Yeah well all who have been reading my ramblings for a while know I usually use unpieced backs which is not really a problem as long as my quilts aren't wider than 59" (150cm) and even if I go bigger it only makes the selection smaller but I can easily go up to 110" (280cm). And funnily even though I measure my blocks and sashing and everything in inch - as soon as it comes to measureing the whole thing I take out my metric tools - I still can't think in inch when anything get's bigger than 12" and even then I my "idea" of how big the thing is rarely the actual size [12 inch are damn huge]. Same as I still sometimes catch myself at converting the €uros to the old curency - yeah the inch centimetre thing will take some more years.

So yeah I don't use the fabrics from the front in the back as I never have enough for the front pattern and a complete back. So I go hunting looking for the perfect backing fabrics and sometimes I find something - like the one on the left. I saw it, I bought it, now I'm basting it.

Yeah I know I'm lazy and I admit it. I really like being lazy sometimes.

weekend printing

Me and some friends - ok in good English some friends and I - did some farbic printing this weekend. It was mostly eating and talking, but we did get some things done.

                                                                                I printed a lot of 10cm pre-cuts, a lovely dinosaur for my kid sister - I have another one on the light blue fabric and of course my two typewriters as everyone seems to own typewriter fabric.

WIP Wednesday

No finishes to show as my swap quilt is still enjoying the scenerey travelling to the US but I "unamde" my mistake on the castle blocks by adding some "grass" and I actually sewed on the doors ... now in the last step I need to add some sort of border on the left / right and the top.

and luckily for me the mother of a friend cleared out her fabric stash and asked if I wanted a bag ful ... yes of course!
